(21:45:47) mjl-: i've changed ttffs a bit, to make it possible to enumerate ttf fonts (with name, style and sizes).  next is modifying fontsrv to use that information to build its font database.  i'm also giving it a built-in list of known inferno fonts, and a way to enumerate other bitmap fonts, and a way to get a list of fonts matching a font-spec.
(21:46:17) mjl-: i've also looked at freetype a bit more.  enabling the byte code interpreter for hinting gives much better results, less blurry fonts.
(21:47:05) mjl-: autohinting is the default, because of patents (freetype's default), but those patents have expired now.
(21:48:15) mjl-: i also noticed mono (non-greyscale/antialiased) verdana is better than the anti-aliased version at some pixel sizes.  but there doesn't seem to be a way to automatically discover which pixel sizes look good in mono (plus, inferno doesn't give an interface to render mono glyphs)
