Conversation with #inferno at Wed Aug 1 23:25:34 2012 on powerman-asdf@irc.freenode.net (irc) (23:26:05) infernjo: it's great to see activity here, alas i have to do some "real work" now... aram, leetspete and i were just talking over "neat" projects for inferno... hope the conversation continues and we keep the inferno flame lit. cheers! (23:27:34) leetspete: infernjo: Same here. (00:12:39) Aram left the room (quit: Quit: .). (00:18:16) MrWGW left the room (quit: Ping timeout: 244 seconds). (05:12:59) infernjoe_: (it rules a small kingdom, but it rules nonetheless) (05:21:05) leetspete: infernjoe_: It's got to be large, right, with all the sinners and noble pagans. (06:31:15) ngharo: Greetings. I notice the tarball on the google project page is pretty out of date. Would it be best for a new user to compile from source? (06:31:34) ngharo: also, is it possible to run Inferno-os inside virtualbox? (06:37:14) ngharo: I read that I can run it "hosted", as in inside my current linux install. Cool.. guess i'll start there :) (06:39:13) doublec: it compiles from source pretty easily so do that if you can (06:42:34) ngharo: ok thanks (06:43:34) ngharo: dumb question: does inferno have a C compiler? or would I need to port C to Limbo? (06:47:45) infernjoe_: leetspete: LOL (06:51:17) infernjoe_: ngharo: are you wanting to compile c code to run inside inferno? if that's your goal, you might be happier with plan9 or p9p (http://swtch.com/plan9port/) or 9vx (http://swtch.com/9vx/) (06:51:36) infernjoe_: within inferno, limbo or shell is really the "right" way to do things (06:55:52) ngharo: alright. I became interested in Inferno after seeing it run on top of the android userspace at defcon (06:56:00) ngharo: making my own apps would be far down the road (06:56:18) ngharo: and after all, if everything is a file, shell apps should work nicely (06:56:47) ngharo: shell scripts* (07:25:55) infernjoe_: wow, did they show John Floren's work or something new/different at Defcon. (07:26:31) infernjoe_: btw, did you get your defcon badge? i'm a propeller user and i saw the announcement on the parallax board (07:47:41) leetspete: ngharo: The "hosted" mode is because Inferno has a VM which can run in userspace. No Virtualbox needed. :) (07:52:10) leetspete: The tarball is dated, but is provided as a way to speed up the pull of the repo. If you unpack it and `hg pull`, you'll be up to date. (07:58:36) doublec: ngharo: who demoed it a defcon? (08:03:57) ngharo: infernjoe_: yeah it was Floren who gave the speech (08:05:05) ngharo: and yes, I got a badge (08:05:26) ngharo: haven't tinkered with it much... read up on propeller though. Looks really cool (08:05:32) doublec: I installed inferno on my nexus s - it's pretty neat (08:05:38) doublec: but needs some work (08:21:39) ecelis [ecelis@otaku.sdf.org] entered the room.
