(05:32:47) leetspete1: joe___: There's no drawterm-like client. But cpu(1) now shoves your local graphics context along to the other machine, so except that drawterm itself doesn't work, it is essentially the same functionality. (05:33:05) leetspete1: Where "shoves along" means "exposes via the filesystem". (06:43:36) joe___: leetspete, i'd guessed that i can't drawterm out of inferno into plan9, but could it work the other way? that is, w/o looking at drawterm's code, do you know if the fs it expects is in any way compatible with something inferno can serve? (06:44:51) qrstuv: there is a way to drawterm to plan 9 from inferno (06:44:55) qrstuv: but i don't remember how (06:45:03) qrstuv: there's a thread about it on 9fans or the old inferno list (06:48:36) qrstuv: i think only have the stuff you need comes with inferno (06:49:02) qrstuv: the rest is in roger peppe's contrib directory on sources (06:53:15) joe___: qrstuv, i think i've seen a script to do that, but it's the opposite of what i was trying to do. i wanted to use drawterm on windows to access inferno on a remote machine. from what leetspete inferred, cpu(1) might hold the key. i'll stop being lazy and do some reading. (07:36:58) Oksana: How is Inferno different from Plan 9 ? (07:38:39) Oksana: Musing on SheevaPlug with Plan 9 or Inferno as an always-on home server. (07:39:02) powerman: Oksana: Inferno run both native (as main OS, on bare hardware, like Plan9) and hosted (as usual win/linux/macosx app). (07:40:17) nys left the room (quit: Quit: q). (07:40:53) powerman: Unlike Plan9, Inferno apps is portable bytecode for DIS virtual machine. (07:41:00) Oksana: Is that the only difference? (07:42:11) powerman: Because of this you have to use only sh or limbo languages to write apps for Inferno. You can use C to write Inferno "drivers" accessible from Limbo code, but that's not main way to develop for Inferno. (07:42:40) powerman: Everything else is very similar to Plan9. (07:59:16) Oksana: Speed? Memory requirements? (08:03:16) Oksana: UTF-8 in whole OS-filesystem-et-cetera ? (08:19:07) powerman: Speed is good enough. Limbo apps is fast. Not C speed, of course, but not too much slower. (08:20:39) powerman: Memory requirement is small, Limbo apps use usually several kilobytes. According to Inferno website it's able to run on hardware with 1MB RAM. (08:21:54) powerman: Oksana: yeah, utf-8 is everywhere. maybe internal format for strings in limbo is utf16, not sure.
